When the final horn sounded, she had recorded eight goals and two assists to lead the St. Anthony's Friars girls lacrosse team past the Holy Trinity Titans, 23-13, on Wednesday in Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA play.
The Friars improved to 5-0-1 in league play and 7-2-1 overall with the win.
The Titans defense was literally powerless to stop Friars attack. Mangan teamed up with senior Jessica Russo, who added five goals and two assists, to combine for eight first half goals and spearhead an early comeback.
Titans dominated the opening 12 minutes of the first the half. They kept possession of the ball for long stretches of time and jumped out to an early lead behind three quick goals from Jacqueline Williams.
Nothing could save the Titans, however, once Mangan got started. She added two early goals to keep the score close before the Friars took the lead for good on junior Lauren Skrynecki's speedy breakaway goal with 11:11 remaining.
Russo won a face-off at midfield and wisely cleared the ball down field to Skrynecki, who unloaded a wide open shot past the goalie.
The Friars mounted an impressive 9-4 run and erased an early 5-3 deficit to close out the first half.
Any concerns about a Holy Trinity comeback were erased when Mangan opened the second half with three goals in under four minutes.
Once the Friars took the lead, they relied on strong defense to keep it. Junior goalkeeper Danielle Pawliw astounded in the net. She recorded 15 saves and blocked several key penalty shots to keep the Titans from rallying.
Credit the St. Anthony's defense for limiting shot attempts in the second half. They allowed just four second half goals and held the Titans scoreless for over eight minutes stretches twice in the second half.
The Friars moved into a tie with St. John the Baptist for first place with the win. They'll take on St. Dominic in Oyster Bay on Monday before heading home for a rematch against the Kellenberg Firebirds on Wednesday.
